During the past decade, Syracuse University–by leveraging its map of excellence and advancing its vision of Scholarship in Action– has made a set of unparalleled strategic investments in both its faculty and research facilities. As a result, during the past decade, the number of full-time faculty has increased by 20%, and more than $365 million has been invested in creating and renovating research facilities and collaborative venues. This has advanced SU’s research mission significantly and resulted in new cross-disciplinary, high-impact research across a wide array of disciplines. This can been seen most fully in a set of 11 different interdisciplinary, highly collaborative research clusters, which are intensifying research while broadening scholarly excellence across the University and paying strong dividends. The University’s total sponsored research expenditures, which represent a diverse portfolio of corporate, foundation, federal, state and local resources, increased 94% from 2002 to 2010. This positive trajectory continues with a diversified portfolio that demonstrates SU’s agility and entrepreneurial focus, as well as its determination to depend not solely on federal government funding, but on a wide array of funding sources, support and partnerships.
