Campus Hot News Syracuse University time warner cable offers discount to su employees

Time Warner Cable will offer Syracuse University employees a discounted rate for Road Runner Internet access service if a minimum of 300 individuals subscribe.

Road Runner delivers Internet access through cable TV lines at a rate of up to 10 Mbps, or 100 times faster than conventional telephone modem connections. Some SU staff members claim the service is nearly as fast as their Internet connections from their office machines on campus. In addition, Road Runner does not tie up your telephone line.

The subscription cost for SU Time Warner cable subscribers will be $29.95 per month plus tax and a one-time installation charge. (Road Runner's regular monthly charge for cable subscribers is $39.95.) The monthly rate for SU employees who live in the Time Warner cable area but who do not subscribe to cable service will be $34.95. There are three installation options, ranging from $39 for self-installation to $99 for a full installation by Road Runner technicians.

Included in the Road Runner service are:

  • Unlimited Internet usage
  • 5 megabytes Web homepage space ($1.00 for each additional megabyte)
  • One IP address (one active session per modem connection)
  • 5 e-mail accounts (one master account and four sub-accounts)

First offered in the Syracuse area suburbs, Road Runner is now available in many parts of the city, including the University area. Time Warner expects to have the entire city connected by December 1. To qualify for the discount program, you must be a regular full-time or part-time faculty or staff member at Syracuse University. If you are already a Road Runner subscriber and a regular SU employee, you would eligible for the discounted monthly rate, but you need to complete the Web form (see details below) to identify yourself and help us reach the 300-subscriber quota.

Although Computing and Media Services does not endorse Road Runner or benefit from SU employee subscriptions to the service, we have agreed to collect subscription requests. If 300 people sign up, CMS will forward the information to Time Warner and a Road Runner representative will contact individuals to arrange for service. If we do not receive 300 requests, individuals can still subscribe directly with Time Warner at the regular price.

The cut-off date for indicating your intent to subscribe is December 7, 1998. We will let you know the outcome of this sign-up campaign shortly thereafter.
