Malmgren Concert Series continues Nov. 15 with Martin Jean

Organist Martin Jean will perform in concert at Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel on Sunday, Nov. 15, as part of the Esther Drake and John Vincent Malmgren Concert Series.

The concert will begin at 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the Irving Garage and in the Q1 lot for persons with disabled permits.

Jean will perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Julius Reubke, Maurice Duruflé and William Bolcom. He will also offer a master class for music majors from the Setnor School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 10:30 a.m. in Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College. The master class is open to the public.

Jean is professor of organ at the Yale School of Music and director of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. In 1986, he won first prize in the international Grand Prix de Charteres and in 1992 won first prize in the American Guild of Organists’ National Young Artists’ Competition in organ performance.

He has performed throughout the United States and Europe. In 2001, he presented a cycle of the complete organ works of Bach at Yale. His compact discs of “The Seven Last Words of Christ” by Charles Tournemire and the complete six symphonies of Louis Vierne have been released by Loft Recordings.

The concert is part of the Malmgren Concert Series at Hendricks Chapel. The series was made possible by a gift to Hendricks Chapel from alumna Esther Malmgren ’42 in 1991. The free Sunday afternoon concerts, held throughout the year, feature a wide variety of music.

Other scheduled performances in the 2009–10 Malmgren season are a Rising Star Recital featuring organist Ahreum Han (March 7, 2010), vocal ensemble Amarcord (March 23, 2010) and the Hendricks Chapel Choir’s 2009 Spring Concert (April 19, 2010).
