The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications will host the annual Alexia Photojournalism Seminar and Competition Friday, Feb. 24, and Saturday, Feb. 25, on campus. Tom Kennedy, Alexia Tsairis Endowed Chair in Documentary Photography in the Newhouse School, will host the event, which is sponsored by the Alexia Foundation for World Peace and Cultural Understanding.

The seminar, featuring this year’s judges, will be held Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. in Room 101 Newhouse 1. Judges are Whitney Johnson, director of photography with The New Yorker; Kira Pollack, photo editor with Time magazine; and Maggie Steber, an independent documentary photographer.

Open judging will be held Feb. 25 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in Room 101 Newhouse 1.

The Alexia Foundation was founded by Peter and Aphrodite Tsairis in memory of their daughter, Alexia Tsairis, a victim of the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. At the time of her death, Tsairis was a junior photojournalism student in the Newhouse School. The Alexia Competition awards professional and student photographers whose work gives insight into cultural differences and voices to victims of social injustice.

The winner of the professional portion of the competition will receive a $15,000 grant for the production of the proposed project.

Student awards vary according to the students’ class standing.
