The Institute for the Study of the Judiciary, Politics and the Media (IJPM) at Syracuse University will recognize Constitution Day (Sept. 17) with a public lecture on “The Dynamism and Activism of the Roberts Court” by SCOTUSblog writer Lyle Denniston. The lecture takes place Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 4-5:15 p.m. in 204 Maxwell Hall, and is free and open to the public.
Denniston is now in his 59th year as a journalist. He is the most senior Supreme Court journalist in the country—in his 49th year of covering the court. He is currently covering the court for SCOTUSblog, an Internet-based clearinghouse of information about the Supreme Court’s work. He also reports on the Supreme Court for radio station WBUR in Boston, and for “Justice Talking,” a National Public Radio program originating in Philadelphia. He is the author of “The Reporter and The Law: Techniques of Covering the Courts” (Columbia University Press, 1992). He has contributed two chapters to CQ Press’ book on individuals whose cases made history at the Supreme Court, and a chapter to a second CQ Press book, with the chapter covering the controversial New Deal-era decisions of the Supreme Court on the National Recovery Administration (NRA), and the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA).
He is a member of the hall of fame of the Society of Professional Journalists. He has also served as Supreme Court correspondent for the Baltimore Sun, Boston Globe, Washington Star and Wall Street Journal.
His 4 p.m. lecture Sept. 20, co-sponsored by the American Constitution Society (ACS), will address the changing dynamic of the United States Supreme Court.
Additionally, Denniston will deliver a lecture at 2 p.m. on Sept. 20 in 060 Eggers Hall. This lecture, “9/11 Plus Ten: Entering the Age of Permanent War,” is co-sponsored by IJPM, ACS and the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism (INSCT), a joint academic research center at the Syracuse University College of Law and Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
Launched in September 2006, IJPM is an academic institute devoted to the interdisciplinary study of issues at the intersection of law, politics and the media. A collaborative effort of the College of Law, Maxwell School and S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, the institute sponsors lectures, conferences and symposia designed to foster discussion and debate among legal scholars, sitting judges and working journalists.
