Director Scott Sanders to visit SU's Newhouse School Feb. 22 and 23 for annual 'Conversation on Race and Entertainment Media'

Film director and screenwriter Scott Sanders will visit Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications on Tuesday, Feb. 23, for the ninth annual “Conversation on Race and Entertainment Media” with Richard Dubin, Newhouse professor of practice in television-radio-film. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse 3.
In addition, a screening of Sanders’ film “Black Dynamite” will take place on Monday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. and again at 5:15 p.m. in Room 141 of Newhouse 3. Both events are free and open to the public. Parking is available in SU pay lots.
Sanders directed and co-wrote “Black Dynamite,” which won critical acclaim at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and earned him an NAACP Image Award nomination for Best Direction of a Feature Film. The film will be released by Sony later this month.
Sanders began his career as a television writer, working on “A Different World,” “Roc” and “The Wayans Brothers.” He made his directorial debut in 1999 with the HBO film “Thick as Thieves,” starring Alec Baldwin.
“Working with Scott, when he was a ‘baby writer’ on Roc, I immediately saw his great promise,” says Dubin.
Sanders is also one of the most popular DJs in Los Angeles, spinning under the name “Suckapunch.”
The Newhouse School’s annual “Conversation on Race and Entertainment Media” is an opportunity for SU students, faculty and staff, and members of the Syracuse community to come together and discuss the ecology of race and television with Hollywood insiders.
