The Syracuse University Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center is hosting a lecture by SU alumnus Michelangelo Signorile on Friday, April 30, at 11 a.m. in the Halmi Screening Room, Room 141 in Newhouse 3. Signorile’s lecture is titled “Demanding Equality: Challenging Media and Politics in a New LGBT Era.”
Signorile is a 1982 graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications who has become a prolific, influential and at times controversial voice within the LGBT community. Signorile has been a columnist for The Advocate magazine since 1991 and now hosts “The Michelangelo Signorile Show” on Sirius XM’s OutQ: Sirius 109, XM 98. In addition, Signorile has authored four books and has written for numerous publications, including The New York Times, USA Today and Newsweek. He regularly appears on television talk shows as a commentator.
On Thursday, April 29, Signorile will receive the LGBT Community Foundation Award for Outstanding Alumnus at the Syracuse University Rainbow Banquet in recognition of his contributions and leadership on a national level to improve the quality of life for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
“We are excited to honor Michelangelo Signorile for his extraordinary work, political insight and skilled journalism across so many forms of public communications including magazine, newspaper, radio, television and the Internet,” says Adrea Jaehnig, director of the LGBT Resource Center. “We are thrilled that he will offer a public lecture on Friday that is certain to provide a timely and sharp analysis of the status of the LGBT movement within today’s political and media context.” Signorile’s Friday talk is co-sponsored by the Newhouse School.
The April 30 lecture is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available in the University Avenue Garage.
