Bryce Hand, emeritus professor of geology at Syracuse University, and Dereth Glance, executive director of the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, will discuss hydrofracking at this week’s Institute for Retired Professionals (IRP) meeting. Meetings are held the first and third Thursday of each month from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Syracuse, 5833 E. Seneca Turnpike, Jamesville.
Locally, hydrofracking (hydraulic fracturing) is a hot topic. Experts from both sides of the debate will explain their views on this controversial process.
Hand received a B.A. from Antioch College. While completing his undergraduate studies, he worked six months each at the U.S. Geological Survey Geochemistry Branch in Washington, D.C.; the USGS Ground Water Branch in Trenton, N.J.; and the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. He received a master of science degree from the University of Southern California, researching marine geology with a focus on deep-water bottom sediments off Southern California. Hand earned his Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University, where his research focused on beach and coastal dune sediments.
Glance is an officer and board member of the Clean Water Network and serves on the Governor’s New York Clean Water Collaborative. She was recently appointed by Gov. Paterson to serve on the New York State Great Lakes Basin Advisory Council. She also is on the board of directors of the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA) and chairs the agency’s recycling committee.
Glance is active in a wide range of environmental issues, including the Great Lakes, air pollution, water quality, energy policy, conservation, waste and recycling, and wildlife protection. She attended Michigan State University, where she received her B.A. from the James Madison College of Public Affairs.
The Institute for Retired Professionals, established by University College of Syracuse University, provides opportunities for retired people to stay intellectually active, to expand interests and to make new acquaintances. Presentations are made by SU faculty and specialists within the community.
