The Institute for Retired Professionals (IRP) will host Tucker B. Culbertson, assistant professor of law at Syracuse University College of Law, at its Oct. 7 meeting. His topic will be “Another New Deal: Thoughts on the Recession, the Obama Agenda, the Constitution and the Supreme Court.” Culbertson will discuss the recent economic events that have captured the country’s attention, as well as forthcoming economic regulations and the parallels between the present and the New Deal era.
Culbertson earned an A.B. from Princeton University, where he studied literary theory and theater. He earned a J.D. from the University of California-Berkeley, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. through Berkeley’s Jurisprudence and Social Policy Program. He previously was a fellow with the Center for the Study of Law and Culture at Columbia Law School and a lecturer in political science at San Francisco State University and UC-Berkeley. His research and writing focus on counterterrorism, colorblindness, marriage and the extraterritorial application of the U.S. Constitution.
The Institute for Retired Professionals, established by University College of Syracuse University, provides opportunities for retired people to stay intellectually active, to expand interests and make new acquaintances. Presentations are made by SU faculty and specialists within the community.
The program is free and open to the public. Meetings are held the first and third Thursday of each month from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Syracuse, 5833 E. Seneca Turnpike, Jamesville. Several times each year, members may take part in special activities such as day trips, tours and luncheons.
