The Syracuse University/SUNY-ESF chapter of Habitat for Humanity will break ground on its fourth student-funded and constructed Habitat home in a ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. at 649 Gifford St. on Syracuse’s Near Westside. Chancellor Nancy Cantor and other University and community officials will attend to celebrate with students from both universities, as well as current Habitat homeowners.
“Our campus chapter is really looking forward to the opportunity to discuss the need for affordable housing here in Syracuse and how the student-sponsored house will be a small step in the right direction,” says Paul Stanley, an SU senior and co-executive director of the SU/SUNY-ESF chapter of Habitat for Humanity. “We hope to get many University and community members involved after the groundbreaking to help make this home a reality.”
The ceremony will mark the beginning of a five-month period when hundreds of SU and SUNY-ESF students will spend time building on the construction site and working to raise $60,000 needed to finance the home.
SU/SUNY-ESF Habitat for Humanity is a united group of SU and SUNY-ESF students who are committed to providing decent, affordable housing through house sponsorship, building projects and alternative break building trips. The chapter was established in 1991.
