Kristin Carlson ’99 and Lee Zurik ’96, alumni of the broadcast journalism program in Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and recent recipients of the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, will visit SU on Wednesday, March 3. They will speak on their award-winning reporting at 7:30 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse 3. Their talk is free and open to the campus community.
“The duPont” is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in broadcast journalism. Carlson, senior political reporter with WCAX-TV in Burlington, Vt., was part of a team that received the award for a series called “Foreigners on the Farm,” which examined the use of migrant workers on Vermont dairy farms. Zurik was part of a team from WWL-TV in New Orleans that won for an investigation into the New Orleans Affordable Housing Program. Zurik is currently chief investigative reporter for Fox 8 News in New Orleans.
Carlson is also the recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award. She is the lead statehouse reporter, Montpelier (Vt.) bureau chief and host of the weekly news program “You Can Quote Me.” She hosts the monthly public affairs show "Public Square" on Vermont Public Television and serves as a correspondent for WDEV Radio in Waterbury, Vt.
Zurik is also the recipient of the George Foster Peabody Award, the IRE Gold Medal, the Edward R. Murrow Regional Award and several awards from the Press Club of New Orleans. He has held several anchor and reporter positions in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi.
