Director of Music Douglas Kinney Frost and performers of the Syracuse Opera Company will visit Syracuse University to offer a preview of "Romeo and Juliet," the operatic adaptation by Charles Gounod, on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 12:30 p.m. in Setnor Auditorium, located in Crouse College. Frost and Syracuse Opera's resident artists will take part in a discussion of "Romeo and Juliet" and perform several songs from the opera.
In addition, members of the University community will enjoy discounts for the March 6 performance of the opera at Syracuse's Mulroy Civic Center. Tickets for the March 6 event are $3 for students with SU I.D. and $5 for faculty, staff and alumni; general public tickets begin at $18 and can be purchased by calling (315) 424-8200 or online at http://www.syracuseopera.com.
The preview and discount tickets (quantities are limited) are sponsored by the Pulse performing arts program; the discount tickets are for sale in the Schine Box Office.
On Feb. 12, the afternoon will begin with a discussion of the upcoming production of "Romeo and Juliet." Syracuse Opera's resident artists will then perform vocal highlights from the opera, including "Je veux vivre" (Juliet's Waltz), "Depuis hier je cherche en vain mon maitre" (Stephano's Aria), "Ah, leve toi, soleil!" (Romeo's Soliloquy) and "Mab, la reine des mensonges" (The Ballad of Queen Mab). The afternoon will conclude with a discussion of young artist training and questions from students, faculty and staff.
Preview parking will be available to the public free of charge at the Irving Garage; patrons should notify the attendant that they are visiting SU for the opera preview.
Gounod's "Romeo and Juliet" is widely regarded as the greatest operatic telling of the story. Considered Gounod's masterpiece, the production is known for its choral music, melodies and lively drama.
The Pulse performing arts program, presented by SU's Division of Student Affairs, provides SU undergraduates and the Central New York community with out-of- classroom opportunities to attend and participate in programs, performances, exhibitions and events in the performing and visual arts.
