Syracuse University’s Division of Student Affairs has named Gerald Martin director of the Office of Judicial Affairs. The search process for the director position began last May, following the resignation of former director Ramy Badawy. Patrick Mc Peak, associate director, has served as director in the interim. Martin begins work at SU on Jan. 19.
Martin is currently the director of judicial affairs at Winston-Salem State University in Winston Salem, N.C., where he has worked for five years. Prior to serving as the director, he was assistant director of housing and residence life for judicial affairs at Winston-Salem. He has also served as dean of men at St. Augustine’s College, assistant director of the SAGE (Students Achieving Goals Through Education) program at Towson University and a residence director at Kent State University.
“Gerald brings to SU a wealth of practical experience in student conduct, residence life and general student affairs administration,” says Rebecca Reed Kantrowitz, associate vice president of the Inclusion, Community and Citizenship portfolio in the Division of Student Affairs. “We look forward to having him join us next semester.”
Martin holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Appalachian State University, a master’s degree in personnel services from The Ohio State University and a doctoral degree in exercise and sport science from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
His doctoral dissertation was “A Comparison of African American Athletes’ Nurturing Experiences at Historically Black and Historically White Colleges/Universities.” Martin is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Association for Student Conduct Administration, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and a graduate of the Donald D. Gehring Institute.
The Office of Judicial Affairs resolves alleged violations of the SU Code of Student Conduct and works to achieve civility and good citizenship within the University community.
