U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will visit Dr. King Magnet School, 416 Raynor Ave. in Syracuse, following the meeting of the White House Task Force on Middle Class Families on the Syracuse University campus Wednesday. Secretary Duncan’s visit will provide an exciting opportunity to highlight the Syracuse community-wide commitment to Say Yes to Education.
The event will begin at 12:45 p.m. with a rally at the entrance of the school led by student volunteers who are part of Generation YES and will be followed by three key events inside the school: a community leadership meeting to provide an overview of the core Say Yes goals and the Syracuse community-wide commitment to reach them; a Health & Legal Clinic overview and tour; and an Extended Day Program overview presented by Say Yes students and parents in the school library.
The leadership meeting will be attended by various local and national leaders, including Richard Iannuzzi, president of the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney, SU Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor, Syracuse City School District Superintendant Dan Lowengard, Say Yes to Education founder George Weiss, and state Assembly woman Joan Christensen, among other dignitaries.
Say Yes to Education Inc. (Say Yes) is a national, nonprofit education foundation committed to dramatically increasing high school and college graduation rates for urban youth.
