Syracuse City School District (SCSD) Superintendent Daniel Lowengard and SCSD senior administrators will join Syracuse University School of Education Dean Douglas Biklen on Thursday, Dec. 4, to take part in a banner-raising event to celebrate Salem Hyde Elementary School becoming the district's newest School of Promise. Students, faculty and staff from Salem Hyde and the School of Education also will take part in the event, which is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. in the cafeteria at the school, located at 450 Durston Ave. in Syracuse.
Schools of Promise is a partnership program between the School of Education and local school districts. The program introduces inclusive schooling on a whole-school basis, instead of a classroom-based approach. The program covers issues of inclusion and belonging relating to school climate, classroom community and students with disabilities. Schools of Promise also provides for extensive on-site professional development and support for teachers and leaders to meet a wide range of student needs in collaborative ways.
The partnership is designed to improve elementary schools for all students, especially students who have traditionally not been successful in schools, including students with disabilities, students learning English, students of color and students from low income families. In addition to its SCSD partners, Schools of Promise has multi-year partnerships with the East-Syracuse Minoa School District and Longbranch Elementary School in the Liverpool School District. For additional information about the banner raising event and the Schools of Promise program, contact Julie Causton- Theoharis at 443-9651 or jcauston@syr.edu, or George Theoharis at 443-5271 or gtheohar@syr.edu.
June 05, 2012 The program, designed in collaboration with the Casting Society of America, was developed for casting students, including key professional components and core courses with fellow Tepper students.
