Leading expert on the effect of indoor environment on human comfort, health and productivity, P. Ole Fanger, to deliver keynote speech
The 2nd annual international Environmental Quality Systems (EQS) Symposium at Syracuse will be held on Oct. 29 and 30 at Carrier Corporation and the Syracuse Wyndham Hotel in East Syracuse, New York. Sponsored by the New York Strategically Targeted Academic Research Center in Environmental Quality Systems (EQS) and the New York Indoor Environmental Quality Center (NYIEQ), the symposium will feature leading-edge research conducted by engineers, scientists and health professionals. The EQS Center and the NYIEQ are major components of the Center of Excellence in Environmental Quality Systems recently announced by Gov. George E. Pataki.
According to EQS Center Director Dr. Ezzat Khalifa, "The EQS Symposium highlights the importance of targeted interdisciplinary research that is necessary for developing intelligent environmental quality systems that protect human health and enhance performance within the urban and built environments."
Participants will also have an opportunity to learn about commercialization programs that are designed to help businesses and researchers alike. Companies such as Carrier Corporation, National Grid, Air Innovations, O'Brien & Gere,C&S Engineers, Robson & Woese and King & King Architects have been working with the academic community for over two years to identify synergies that will lead to job creation and an improved economic climate.
"The symposium provides a forum for our Upstate New York business partners to interact with researchers from all over the world. These exchanges will lead to new ideas that will be moved out of the laboratory and into the marketplace by the participating companies," says R. Leland Davis, executive director of the NYIEQ.
The keynote speaker will be P. Ole Fanger, professor and director of the International Centre for Indoor Environment and Energy at the Technical University of Denmark, a foreign associate of the U.S. National Academy of Engineers and a foreign member of the U.K. Royal Academy of Engineering. Fanger will discuss his interdisciplinary research on the influence of the indoor environment on human comfort, health and productivity.
Also featured will be Robert Fox, co-founder of Fox & Fowle Architects in New York City, the leading architect in urban design, zoning and building infrastructure, who will speak on green building trends. Fox and Fowle Architects designed the Conde Nast Building at Four Times Square in New York City. It is the largest environmentally responsible building project to date, and has been covered extensively by the media. Fox has been a featured speaker at the United Nations' Health and the Environment Conference, Carrier Global Engineering Conference and at the National Building Museum
Among the other internationally known researchers and speakers who will bring their expertise to the Symposium are Paul Gilman, assistant administrator for the Office of Research and Development, the scientific and technological arm of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); Timothy Carey, president and CEO of the Battery Park City Authority; William Fisk, staff scientist and group leader in the Indoor Environment Program at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California; John Shaw of the National Research Center of Canada; and John Bachmann of the EPA's Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards Organization.
