The Syracuse University Alumni Association and the Office of Alumni Relations will soon debut a new Syracuse University tradition in the making--The Orange Grove.
"This campus needs an outside space that alumni, friends and fans can call their own," says Lil Breul O'Rourke '77, associate vice president for alumni relations. "We're happy to announce that they're going to give themselves quite a beautiful one, which we are calling the Orange Grove."
The Orange Grove presents University alumni and friends with an opportunity to have their "mark" etched in granite in a special, reflective space at the heart of campus. The designated Orange Grove location, adjacent to the Quad in front of Bowne Hall, will be installed with granite pavers engraved with the names of all Orange Grove participants. Each 12-inch by 12-inch granite paver can contain up to five lines of engraved personalization.
"All of us want to help the University, and while not everybody can name a building, the Orange Grove offers each of us a little piece SU, where our names can become a permanent part of the campus for friends, family and future generations to see," says National Alumni Association President Deborah Fritsche '74.
The campaign kick-off will be held Oct. 4, during Homecoming weekend, when a sign will be placed on the Quad marking the future site. Representatives with Orange Grove information will be available in the Goldstein Alumni Faculty Center and on the Quad before the Oct. 5 SU vs. Pittsburgh football game. Orders will also be taken at that time. Spaces reserved by Jan. 31, 2003, will be in place for the Orange Grove dedication during Homecoming Weekend 2003.
The project has been developed by an Orange Grove committee, comprising members of the University's Alumni Association. They include Walter J. Bobkiewicz III G'89 of Novato, Calif. (chair); Ellen L. Baker '73 of Center Valley, Pa.; Shereth Landrum Coble '64 of Neptune Beach, Fla.; Fritsche of Houston; (president of the Alumni Association); Bradley S. Glazer '76 of Beachwood, Ohio; Neil A. Gold '70 of Dix Hills, N.Y.; Benjamin I. Green III '85 of Montclair, N.J.; Daniel M.
