Sylvia Nasar, author of "A Beautiful Mind," will visit Syracuse University on Oct. 9 as a keynote speaker in the Syracuse Symposium 2003: "Journeys." Nasar will present "A Beautiful Mind: A Journey Into the Mystery of the Human Mind" at 4:30 p.m. in Maxwell Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Nasar's 1998 biography of Nobel Laureate John Nash won a National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. The work inspired the film that won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Nasar is the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Business Journalism in Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. She is currently working on a book on 20th-century economic thinkers.
Nasar lived in Germany, Washington, D.C., and Turkey before earning her bachelor's degree in literature from Antioch College and master's degree in economics from New York University. She then entered the field of journalism; she has been a writer for Fortune Magazine, a columnist for U.S. News and World Report and a reporter for The New York Times.
The Syracuse Symposium, presented for the University by The College of Arts and Sciences, is an annual intellectual festival celebrating interdisciplinary thinking, imagining and creating. The 2003 theme is "Journeys"; journeys of exploration and discovery, intellectual journeys, mythical and artistic journeys, migrations of peoples, exiles, liberations, pilgrimages and more. The series includes lectures, exhibits, performances and other special events.
