Following is an update of activities occurring at Syracuse University Tuesday night and Wednesday (Sept. 12) in response to yesterday's incidents. This information supplements the statement of activities announced earlier yesterday.
Federal authorities have asked the University to clear the Standart lot (between Standart Street and Stadium Place on the west side of campus) to be used as a helipad for helicopter medical evacuation flights from New York City bound for hospital facilities on the Hill. Until further notice, this lot will be closed to all vehicular traffic.
A special Mass will be held at the Alibrandi Catholic Center Tuesday at 10 p.m.
Greek Rush activities are canceled for Tuesday night.
Until further notice, the Schine Dining Center, the Goldstein Dining Center and the Kimmel Food Court will be open 24 hours a day to provide sustenance and a gathering place for members of the University community in the aftermath of Tuesday's events. Likewise, Hendricks Chapel and the Panasci Lounge in the Schine Student Center are open 24 hours.
Public sites with television monitors broadcasting the latest news are located in Room 329 of the Hall of Languages, the Eggers Cafe and Commons area in Eggers Hall, the Schine Student Center and the Goldstein Student Center.
The Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday in Maxwell Hall Room 204.
The Student Association will sponsor "Sheets of Expression" from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday on the Quad. SA members will provide bed sheets and markers, and will assist members of the University community in expressing their thoughts and emotions by writing or drawing on the sheets. Afterward, the sheets will be displayed at a site to be determined.
Coordinated through the Division of Students Affairs, counselors will continue to be available throughout the week for students who need help in dealing with the aftermath of Tuesday's events. The chaplains of Hendricks Chapel and the staff of the Employee Assistance Program are also available.
Beginning Tuesday and continuing through the end of the week from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Center for Public and Community Service and the Student Volunteer Organization will host a table in the Schine atrium to gather financial donations from individuals who would like to contribute to the United Way September 11th Fund, a special relief fund established by the United Way of America.
Also, local emergency management officials encourage those seeking information about family members who may have been involved in Tuesday's incidents to contact the local chapter of the American Red Cross (425-1666) or the Onondaga County Division of Emergency Management (435-2525).
