The hearts and thoughts of Syracuse University are with those in New York City, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere who are directly affected by the apparent terrorist attacks today (Sept. 11).

Chancellor Shaw has asked that classes continue today when possible. It is understood that some students and faculty will be unable to attend because they are taking care of personal matters related to today's incidents. The Chancellor has asked, in the instance of classes that will be held, for faculty to be sensitive to what has occurred and provide all possible support to students. He also asks that everyone be flexible, supportive and understanding because of the unique problems some members of the University community may be facing.

Syracuse University will offer an all-University gathering for students, faculty and staff in Hendricks Chapel at 3 p.m. today.

Syracuse University has put in place a number of options for counseling and togetherness for students, faculty and staff, including:

  • The Counseling Center at 443-4715 will be on call throughout the evening and night offering counseling for students.

  • Hendricks Chapel will be open all evening with chaplains available for prayer, reflection and periodic readings.

  • The Schine Student Center will remain open all evening. The Panasci Lounge in the Center will remain a non-study area and will have counseling and phones available for students to make local and long-distance calls.

  • The Telefund in Room 013 of the Women's Building will have telephones available for students to make local and long-distance calls.

  • All residence halls will have a 7 p.m. meeting in their main lobby. Counselors will be available at the meetings and in the halls throughout the day.

Syracuse University appeals to individuals not rush to judgment on who may have committed these catastrophic acts. Syracuse University will not tolerate any hate crime committed in response to the acts.

All members of the campus community should expect tighter security in the coming week for their safety.

Further updates on the University's support measures will be communicated via e-mail and the Web (at sunews.syr.edu) as information becomes available.
