The Syracuse University Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will perform a concert of dance music at 8 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium in SU's Crouse College. The concert is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of James R. Tapia, director of orchestral activities, the SU Orchestra will perform Dmitri Shostakovich's "Polka from the Golden Age," Wallingford Riegger's "Dance Rhythms," Jean Sibelius' "Valse triste," and Johann Strauss II's "Emperor Waltz."
Under the direction of John Laverty, director of University Bands, the Wind Ensemble will perform Percy Grainger's "English Waltz," Robert Schumann's "Gypsy Dance," Louis Jullien's "Echo du Mont Blanc Polka," and Robert Russell Bennett's "Suite of Old American Dances."
The Wind Ensemble is SU's premiere concert band and is open to student musicians campus-wide. The ensemble performs literature ranging from large symphonic works that require all of its performers to "one-on-a-part" chamber works that require eight to 24 performers. Two concerts are presented each semester on campus, with guest soloists and conductors adding to the varied musical experiences.
The SU Orchestra focuses on the vast richness of Western orchestral literature. Four concerts and several reading sessions are scheduled each year.
