For the third consecutive year, Syracuse University has partnered with several other colleges, universities and educational organizations to host "Higher Education Day" during New York State Fair.
This year's event will be held on Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Participating organizations will be located at the pavilion at Cole Muffler Court (near Gate 1) at the state fairgrounds.
"Higher Education Day can help families get started learning about the many opportunities there are for higher education in New York state," says James C. Ross, president of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu). This collaborative effort is just one of the meaningful ways that all New York colleges and universities work together."
In addition to Syracuse University, participating schools include Cazenovia College, Cornell University, Ithaca College, Le Moyne College, Rochester Institute of Technology, State University of New York Upstate Medical University and Utica College. cIcu and the New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association also will be represented.
Representatives from the 11 schools and organizations have been working with state fair officials since January to organize the event.
To ensure Syracuse University is well represented, several on-campus units have come together to organize the University's role in Higher Education Day. These units include Admissions, Alumni Relations, DIPA, Government and Community Relations, Human Resources, Project Advance, Army ROTC, Syracuse University Continuing Education/University College, University Communications and the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science. Each will bring information, displays, brochures and other items to give out to fair goers.
"This is a great opportunities for us to connect with thousands of alumni, current and prospective students, parents and others who are part of the Syracuse University community," says Lois Gridley, manager of editorial and media services at Syracuse University Continuing Education/University College and one of the organizers of the event. "We hope many people from the University come out, show their support, and enjoy a wonderful day at the New York State Fair."
Among the highlights during Higher Education Day will be a demonstration and display of mini Baja cars built by students and faculty in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science for national engineering competitions. From noon to 12:30 p.m., students encourage fairgoers to take a close look at each car, and share how each was built and designed.
During the day, volunteers from the New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association will staff an "Ask the Expert" booth to provide answers to college financial aid questions, Fairgoers who are enrolled full-time this fall at a college or university can register to win a $1,000 college scholarship.
