The Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University has named retired Col. David B. Berg director of executive education. He will also continue as director of Army programs at the school.
Berg, whose civilian education includes a B.A. in political science from Duquesne University and an M.B.A. from the Whitman School, was commissioned a Military Police second lieutenant in 1966. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Presidential and Meritorious Unit Citations and Army General Staff Badge. He received the American Society of Military Comptrollers National President's Award for Exceptional Service in 2002.
Berg's military assignments include command and staff positions in Vietnam; Ft. Hood, Tex.; Thailand; Ft. Benning, Ga.; Ft. Gordon, Ga.; Ft. Monmouth, N.J.; Ft. Hamilton, N.Y.; Germany; and with the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel (HQDA). He also served as battalion commander of the Military Police School at Ft. McClellan, Ala.; executive officer to the Director of Army Budget (HQDA); Division Chief and Deputy Director of Operations and Support Directorate in the Army Budget Office at ASA (FM&C); and Budget Director of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command at Ft. Monroe, Va.
Upon retiring from the Army in October 1995, Berg became director of Army programs for the Whitman School. His duties include oversight of the Army Comptrollership Program; directing of the Professional Resource Management Course, a mid-career professional development program for resource managers; and directing the Army Comptroller Course, an entry-level course for military comptrollers and second-year interns. He also chairs the Whitman School Building Committee.
Berg's military education includes the Military Police Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society for Collegiate Schools of Business. Berg is a Certified Government Financial Manager and a Certified Defense Financial Manager. He is a member of the American Society of Military Comptrollers, Association of Government Accountants and the American Association for Budget and Program Analysis. He serves as a commissioner on the American Society of Military Comptrollers Certification Commission.
