WCNY-TV will show the proceedings of the School of Architecture's April 6 UPSTATE: downtown symposium, recorded by Syracuse University's Office of Electronic Media Communications. The program will air May 24 at 10 p.m.
The symposium, on issues facing the shrinking of downtown Syracuse and urban revitalization, focused on strategies for Syracuse and what measures can be taken to bring it back to life. SU Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor, Syracuse Mayor Matthew J. Driscoll and SU School of Architecture Dean Mark Robbins introduced the day's events, which included discussions and brainstorming sessions. Planners and designers from other major cities shared strategies that have been successful and related them to downtown Syracuse; Julia Czerniak, SU professor of architecture, moderated a roundtable discussion that included members of the Syracuse Common Council and local business and community leaders as they discussed the University's plans for expansion into downtown.
The launch of the School of Architecture's UPSTATE Institute, the symposium was part of "University as Public Good: Exploring the Soul of Syracuse." WCNY-TV has partnered with SU to make this symposium available to a broader Central New York audience.
