Syracuse University will host the latest conference of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF), May 20-23 at the Wyndham Hotel in Syracuse. The conference includes sessions on topics including group crisis intervention, law enforcement perspectives, critical incidents and stress management.
ICISF is a non-profit, non-governmental organization in special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. The conference offers training from noted instructors in the ICISF-model, continuing education credits for psychologists, specialized certification and more.
Mary Jo Custer, director of student affairs and associate to the senior vice president for student affairs, says the ICISF conference is important because critical incidents happen on campuses and surrounding communities frequently. "Those responding and assisting victims are also affected," she says. "We need to take care of the students, faculty and staff impacted as well as the caregivers."
So far, more than 150 people have registered for the ICISF conference; additional topics will include critical incidents and substance abuse, suicide prevention and psychology of terrorism.
