Christopher Marks, professor of music in Syracuse University's Rose, Jules R. and Sanford S. Setnor School of Music, will participate in The Society for New Music's "King of Instruments: A Parade of Music and Verse" performance on Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. The performance will be held in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium, located in Crouse College.
" 'King of Instruments' is a reference to the organ," says Marks. The piece was written for organ and narrator in 1978 by William Albright. Marks will be joined by local theater actor, Gerard Moses, an SU professor emeritus, who will narrate the performance. Local percussionist Kathy DiNardo will also perform.
"The verses for 'King of Instruments' are silly and nonsensical," Marks continues. "Each movement is completely different in style, including blues, samba and atonal. It is a humorous representation of the organ, and Gerard Moses brings a lot of plot and staging and theater to his narration. This is more than just a music performance."
The evening's program also includes compositions by Hungarian composer Gyorgy Ligeti, SU composer Nicolas Scherzinger, percussion virtuoso John Beck, University of California - San Diego composer George Lewis and University of Michigan composer William Bolcom.
The Society for New Music was founded in 1971 and presents concerts, workshops and master classes year round in Central New York.
The concert is free for SU students with I.D., $15 for the general public and $12 for seniors. Parking is available in Irving Garage.
