The 2001-02 Remembrance Scholars convocation, honoring 35 outstanding Syracuse University scholars from this year's senior class, will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 26 in Hendricks Chapel. The convocation honors the scholars and the victims of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
The Remembrance Scholarships, among the most prestigious scholarships awarded by the University, were founded as a tribute to, and a means of remembrance for, 35 SU students who were killed in the Dec. 21, 1988, bombing while returning to the United States from a semester of study abroad.
The scholarships are funded through an endowment supported by gifts from alumni, friends, parents and corporations. Significant support for the Remembrance Scholarships has been provided by C. Jean Thompson '66 and Richard Thompson G'67 in memory of John F. Phelan and C. Jean Taylor Phelan Terry '43, Jean Thompson's parents, and by the Fred L. Emerson Foundation.
Applicants for the $5,000 Remembrance Scholarship were asked to highlight their academic achievements and their University activities, including community service. They also wrote essays and participated in an interview with members of the selection committee.
"These 35 students share a number of traits," says David M. Rubin, dean of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and chair of the Remembrance Scholars Selection Panel. "They all have strong academic records, they have given enormous amounts of time to Syracuse University and the Syracuse community, and they demonstrated under the pressure of the interview process that they are poised, articulate and well-informed. We on the selection committee have no doubt that they are 35 of the very best college students in America."
During the convocation, Lockerbie Scholars Claire L. Speedie and Fiona Stevenson will be recognized, and a message from the Remembrance Scholars Selection Panel will be delivered by Kalpana S. Babu, senior administrator in The College of Arts and Sciences. A Remembrance Scholar will also speak on behalf of the group. The Remembrance Scholars will be presented by Rubin and greeted by Doris and John Cory, representing the Victims of Pam Am Flight 103.

Cady (international relations and French); Michael J. Caldwell (television, radio and film); Cassandra L. Coville (policy studies and public relations); Meghan Dermody (biochemistry); Paul Dien (international relations and public relations); Denise L. Doser (nursing); Sharon Rebecca Ehm (policy studies and public relations); Lisa Karen Ernst (biology and French).

Hendrickson (information management and technology and political science); Seth Ruggles Hiler (illustration); Bronwyn S. Kirchhoff (bioengineering); Leon James Lapp (history and magazine); M.
