Syracuse University's Office of Publications has been reorganized to streamline operations and better serve the University community. The changes, effective July 1, were announced by Sandi Tams Mulconry, associate vice president for university communications.

Jeffrey Charboneau, director of institutional/administrative publications, has been named executive director for creative services and executive editor of Syracuse University Magazine. Melanie Stopyra, director of purchasing and business operations, has been named director of business operations and technical support.

In making the announcement, Mulconry said: "These changes will help us bring a more unified and consistent look to the University's publications, while better meeting the needs of our various clients. In addition, they will give our writers, designers and client account coordinators a greater variety of projects to work on, thereby enabling them to further develop their skills and expertise."

Charboneau oversees the 17-member creative services team, which was created in January by the merger of the department's academic and institutional/administrative publications teams.

"Previously, each team had editors, designers and client account coordinators who were performing very similar functions," Charboneau says. "We thought we could provide even better service to the University community by merging the two groups."

Charboneau joined SU in 1996 as editor of Syracuse University Magazine; he later served as assistant director and director for institutional/administrative publications and managing editor of the magazine. Prior to joining SU, he worked in corporate communications for Raymond Corp.; for Literacy Volunteers of America; as editor of The Catholic SUN; and as a research editor for The Reader's Digest Association.

He received a bachelor's degree in English from the State University of New York College at Fredonia and a master's degree in magazine journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Stopyra oversees the purchasing of $3 million in printing services annually and is in charge of the office's networks, servers, software and technical support. She leads a staff that includes an assistant director of purchasing, a senior buyer and an administrative assistant, and serves as the internal auditor for the Office of Publications.

Stopyra joined SU in 1975 as a clerk in Printing Services. She joined the Office of Publications in 1984 and served as a production manager, communications manager and assistant director before becoming director of business operations in 1998.

She received a dual bachelor's degree in math and art history from SU's College of Arts and Sciences.

Over the past year, the Office of Publications won 11 regional and national awards for writing, design, illustration and photography.
