New York Gov. George E. Pataki was awarded the Dr. Willis Carrier Achievement Award today at the announcement of the Center of Excellence in Environmental Systems (CoE-ES). The award, given for the first time, was presented to Pataki in recognition of his significant and sustaining contributions to the enhancement of the human environment.
The Chancellor of Syracuse University may select a worthy recipient after consultation with academic and industry partners affiliated with CoE-ES. The first award is presented in 2002 in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Dr. Carrier's invention of modern air conditioning, a technology breakthrough that revolutionized the world in which we live and work. Over the past 100 years, air conditioning has boosted industrial production, allowing unimagined industries to flourish. It has changed the face of urban architecture and provided comfort cooling to some of the world's most prestigious buildings. It has liberated man from the limits imposed by stifling heat and humidity, and it has improved health care for millions.
"When considering an award to recognize leadership in improving the human environment, both the award name and first recipient immediately became evident," said Kenneth Shaw, Chancellor, Syracuse University. "New York has a century of pioneering leadership and innovation in this field, and we're pleased to highlight that by presenting the first Dr. Willis Carrier Achievement Award to Governor George Pataki."
Subsequent award recipients will be selected and awards presented on an as-warranted basis.
