Michael F. Hogan, chair of the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health and director of the Ohio Department of Mental Health, will deliver the keynote address during the Onondaga Citizens League's 2003 Community Leadership Conference. Hogan earned a Ph.D. from Syracuse University.
The conference will be held June 11 from 8:30-2 p.m.; required pre-registration is $40, available by calling the OCL office at 443-4846 or by e-mailing OCL@syr.edu before June 3. The conference site will be The William Noah Allyn International Center for Training and Development, located at 4355 State Street Rd., Skaneateles.
Conference topics will include national, state and local policy perspectives; recommendations for improving the nation's public mental illness treatment system; financing of mental health care; and the impact of mental illness on employers and the workforce.
OCL is a nonprofit citizen-based organization created under the auspices of SU Continuing Education 25 years ago to promote citizen education and involvement in public affairs. Each year OCL conducts a study on a topic of importance to the community and releases its findings to public officials and other interested individuals and affected groups. The 2003 OCL study, "Mental Health Services: Access, Availability and Responsiveness" is attempting to determine how well public social policy and the mental health services infrastructure have adapted to support changes in the delivery system and in the needs of consumers.
