The Institute for Retired Professionals (IRP) named Suzanne Gladys the Volunteer of the
Year at its recent annual meeting and luncheon.

The Volunteer of the Year Award is presented to an individual whose commitment to a
variety of civic and cultural organizations, spent in the service of others, greatly benefits
countless Central New York residents. Gladys has volunteered her time at the Everson
Museum of Art as a docent and as a volunteer during the museum's Festival of Trees. Over
the past 15 years, Gladys has worn many different hats as a volunteer at the Rosamond
Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park. She is currently a leader on the zoo's puppet committee, has
hosted sleepovers at the zoo, participated in "ZooBoo" activities, presided as Mrs. Claus
during the holiday season, and worked as an education volunteer.

Gladys received dual bachelor's degrees in biology and education, and a master's degree in
education from Syracuse University.

Gladys was a science teacher for the Syracuse City School District for 32 years. She has
served on the board of the New York State United Teachers and Syracuse University
Alumnae Association. She also served two terms as president of IRP.

"I'm most appreciative of this award," says Gladys. "It was totally unexpected. IRP is an
educational and informative program and keeps seniors aware of all the things going on in
our area. The diverse speakers representing all areas of the community-education, law
enforcement, charitable institutions and politics-keep us updated on the issues that affect
us all. I am happy to be a part of it."

The Institute for Retired Professionals, established by University College of Syracuse
University, provides opportunities for retired people to stay intellectually active, to expand
interests and make new acquaintances. Subjects for programs have included public and
community events, political and social issues, fine arts, science and the environment.
Presentations are made by SU faculty and specialists within the community.
