George M. Langford, dean of The College of Arts and Sciences, will address new
members of Kappa of New York, SU's Phi Beta Kappa chapter, during the group's
initiation ceremony May 8 at 2:30 p.m. in Maxwell Auditorium.
Thirty-nine students in The College of Arts and Sciences will be inducted. The student
speaker will be Theresa Walsh, dual major in policy studies and magazine journalism in
The College of Arts and Sciences and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public
Communications. Walsh is also a student in the Renee Crown University Honors
Program.
Kappa of New York officers who will conduct the initiation ceremony include chapter
president Eric Holzwarth, deputy director of the Renee Crown University Honors
Program; vice president Wayne Franits, chair and professor of fine arts in The College of
Arts and Sciences; chapter secretary Joe Shedd, associate professor of teaching and
leadership in the School of Education; and chapter treasurer Kay Fiset, University College
program director.
A reception for initiates and guests will follow in the Maxwell Foyer immediately after the
ceremony.
Established in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the most prestigious academic honor society in the
United States. Membership is based on academic achievement, intellectual breadth and
good character. The SU chapter was founded in 1896.
