More than 50 senior military and civilian leaders from both the public and private sectors are
in residence at the Maxwell School for two weeks for the
2009 National Security
Management Course, "Unprecedented Times-Unparalleled Importance." The program
offers an intensive professional development curriculum designed to develop management,
leadership and decision-making skills. While in Syracuse, the group will engage in lectures,
discussions, simulations and case studies with more than 40 distinguished guest speakers
and mentors.
Participants represent all segments of the military-active, guard and reserve. They include
18 with the rank of general, as well as representatives from the U.S. Department of State, the
Government Accountability Office, state and local governments and the private sector.
In addition to a diverse range of academics from Syracuse University and other institutions,
speakers will include authors and journalists with experience writing about international
affairs, politics and national security, as well as senior military leaders, including Adm.
Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Gen. Victor Renuart, commander of
NORAD and the U.S. Northern Command; and Gen. Craig McKinley, chief of National
Guard Bureau. Other speakers during the program will include a former assistant secretary
of treasury, U.S. deputy secretary of state and U.S. ambassador.
Upon completion of the course, these senior professionals will join the ranks of the more than
1,700 alumni who have participated in National Security Studies programs at the Maxwell
School since its inception in 1996.
