Syracuse University Library Associates' annual spring luncheon will be held on Friday, May
1, at noon in the Milton Atrium of the Life Sciences Complex. The keynote speaker will be
Jim Howe, executive director of the Nature Conservancy of Western and Central New York,
who will discuss the organization's overall goal of protecting at least 10 percent of every
major habitat type on Earth by 2015.
Howe is co-author of "Balancing Nature and Commerce in Gateway Communities" (Island
Press, 1997), a book intended to help communities preserve their quality of life in the face of
heavy growth and development pressures. He serves on the New York State Advisory Board
of the Land Trust Alliance and the board of trustees of the Black River Environmental
Improvement Association. Howe holds a bachelor's degree in natural resources study from
Cornell University and a master's degree in public policy from the University of Michigan.
Tickets to the luncheon are $25 for Library Associates members and $30 for the public. For
