“Understanding Knowledge as a Commons: From Theory to Practice” (MIT Press, 2007), co-edited by Charlotte Hess, associate university librarian for collections and scholarly communication at the Syracuse University Library, (with Elinor Ostrum) was recently published in an Italian translation. “La conoscenza come bene comune. Dalla teoria alla pratica” was released by Bruno Mondadori in Milan last month.
The book looks at knowledge as a shared resource and explores how to conceptualize it, protect it and build it in the digital age. Contributors are experts from a range of disciplines who consider the historical concept of the commons and offer an analytical framework for understanding knowledge as a shared socio-ecological system.
Hess is the founder and former director of the Digital Library of the Commons. Before coming to Syracuse in August 2008, she was director of library and information services at the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University. She has been the information officer for the International Association for the Study of the Commons since 1997.
