The Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University will celebrate
its sixth annual "Whitman Day" on Tuesday, April 7. The day will be full of activities
to celebrate Martin J. Whitman for his continuous support of the school that bears his
name and to acknowledge his numerous contributions to the investment community.

Whitman Day will kick off at 11 a.m. with a keynote address by Daniel D'Aniello '68,
founding partner and managing director of The Carlyle Group, who will speak on
"The New World Order and Its Implications for Private Equity" in the Lender
Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available in the
University Avenue Garage.

Immediately following the lecture, Whitman, founder and co-chief investment officer
of Third Avenue, and Fernando Diz, the Whitman Associate Professor of Finance, will
sign copies of their new book being released in April, "Distress Investing" (Wiley,
2009). This groundbreaking book analyzes distress situations such as pricing issues,
arbitrage opportunities, tax disadvantages and the reorganization of funding plans,
using case studies of some of the biggest situations.

D'Aniello will also be recognized as the recipient of the 2009 Martin J. Whitman
Distinguished Service Award during an invitation-only lunch. The award honors
alumni and friends of Whitman who have made significant contributions to the
school. The presentation of the Martin J. Whitman Distinguished Service Award will
be followed by the recognition of Whitman Student Scholars and Whitman Faculty
Fellows.

"Every year, Whitman Day serves as a wonderful reminder to our students, faculty
and staff of the spirit Marty Whitman embodies-dedication to community service, a
passion for business and a never-ending quest for knowledge," says Melvin T. Stith,
dean of the Whitman School. "We are honored to celebrate him and to celebrate our
school with an exceptional lecture by such an accomplished and distinguished
alumnus-Daniel D'Aniello. We are grateful to them for demonstrating their
commitment to our students with their time and insights during Whitman Day."
