Five individuals were elected voting members of the Syracuse University Board of Trustees during the Board's annual meeting, held during Commencement weekend. Also, two trustees were granted emeritus status.
The new trustees are Michael M. Bill '58, John E. Breyer, Robert G. Burton, Richard L. Haydon '66 and Richard L. Thompson G'67. Additionally, Paul Greenberg '65 was re-elected to a term as a voting trustee.
W. Carroll "Nick" Coyne '54, LAW '57 and John R. Lord were named emeriti trustees after serving on the Board for 32 and six years, respectively. Coyne also rotated off the executive committee after 21 years of service.
The Board honored other members who are completing various terms. Eric Mower '66, G'68, completed his term as vice chair and a member of the executive committee after five years and nine years, respectively. Tarky Lombardi '51, LAW '54, completed his term as a member of the executive committee after 21 years of service. George Babikian '53 completed his term as a member of the executive committee and chair of the board organization and nominating committee (BONC) after five years and six years, respectively. Edward Green '47, LAW '60 completed his term as a member of BONC after six years of service.
Bill, a graduate of The College of Arts and Sciences, is co-founder and president of M-J Insurance Inc. in Indianapolis. He co-founded the company, an independent retail insurance brokerage, in 1964.
At SU, Bill is a member of the Founders Society and a major donor to the University's athletics programs.
Breyer is president and CEO of Microwave Instrumentation Technologies in Duluth, Ga. He previously served as senior vice president and president of the instrumentation group at Scientific-Atlanta Inc. and general manager of the underseas systems department at General Electric in Syracuse.
He is a member of the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science Advisory Board and has served as the University's liaison with Scientific-Atlanta Inc. and General Electric.
Burton is president and CEO of Moore Corp. Ltd. in Bannockburn, Ill. He was previously a professional football player with the Buffalo Bills and served in senior positions with IBM Corp., CBS Publishing, Capital Cities/ABC Inc., World Color Press and Walters Industries Inc.
His SU affiliations include being a member of the School of Management's Corporate Advisory Council, the Chancellor's Council and the Society of Fellows. He is a major donor to the School of Management through the Robert G. Burton Endowed Scholarship and to the University's athletics programs.
Haydon, a graduate of The College of Arts and Sciences, is a managing partner and securities analyst with Strategic Restructuring Partnership in New York City. He was previously with Goldman Sachs and Co., Gabelli & Co., Gabelli-Rosenthal, Brean Murry Foster Securities Inc. and McKinley Allsopp Inc.
At SU, Haydon is a member of the School of Management Advisory Board, the School of Management Ballentine Center, the Metropolitan New York Advisory Board, the National Campaign Council, the National Alumni Board, the Chancellor's Council and the Society of Fellows.
Thompson, who received a master's degree in political science from the Maxwell School, is vice president for government affairs at Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. in Washington, D.C. A Vietnam veteran, he previously served as director of Washington affairs for Abbott Laboratories; staff director and counsel to the minority of the House Committee on Government Operations; and minority counsel for the Subcommittee on Intergovernmental Relations and Human Resources of the House Committee on Government Operations.
He is a member of the Washington, D.C., Advisory Board and served on the Maxwell Advisory Board, the Management Corporate Advisory Council and the Schine Center National Committee. A member of the Society of Fellows, Thompson and his wife, Jean, are major gift donors to the Remembrance Scholarship Fund.
In other business, the Trustees approved the following: the University's Academic Plan in principle, the fiscal 2001-02 budget, the conferring of student degrees, the awarding of honorary degrees, the granting of the "emeritus" title to retiring faculty, the promotion of faculty, the recommendations of the Academic Affairs Committee for continuing faculty and new faculty appointments with tenure, and a memorial resolution for Trustee Raymond T. Schuler.
The Trustees also heard a report from Virginia Denton, director of the Office of Design and Construction, on the campus master plan and a report from one of the three student representatives to the Board.
