Jazz and physics are on tap for the next installment of the Tuesday Night Lecture Series,
presented by the Department of Physics in Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences,
which will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 31, in the Physics Building's Stolkin Auditorium.
The event will feature jazz saxophonist Robert Pompi, associate professor of physics at
Binghamton University, who will present "The Joy of Sax," and a performance by TCB-"The
Celebration Band" jazz quartet. The lecture is free and open to the public. Paid parking is
available in SU's Irving Garage on Irving Ave.
Pompi will combine his experiences as a performing musician and a physicist to discuss the
physics of music production in instrumental families (woodwinds, brass, etc.) and the human
voice. The discussion will include demonstrations of the instruments.
Pompi holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and joined the Binghamton University Department
of Physics in 1968. His academic interests include experimental solid-state physics,
superconducting films and tunneling phenomena.
TCB bills itself as "Central New York's hottest party band." The band plays for wedding
receptions, clubs, class reunions, company parties, birthdays, graduations and anniversaries.
