Harriet Brown, assistant professor of magazine journalism in Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, is the editor of "Feed Me!: Writers Dish About Food, Eating, Weight and Body Image" (Ballantine Books, 2009). A book signing will be held Thursday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. in Room 432 of Newhouse 3. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in SU pay lots.
According to Publishers Weekly, "Brown's wide-ranging essay collection about women's relationships with food is more than the sum of its parts, making an effective cross-section of modern Western attitudes toward eating." Essayists featured in the book are Joyce Maynard, Caroline Leavitt, Ophira Edut, Jane E. Brody and Diana Abu-Jaber, among others.
Brown has nearly 30 years' experience as both a writer and editor in magazines. She has worked on two start-up staffs--for Wigwag and American Girl--as well as at magazines like Redbook and New York Woman. She writes for many national publications, including The New York Times Magazine, Elle, Vogue, Health, Glamour and Parenting. Her recent work can be found in The New York Times science section, where she covers issues such as food, eating and body image. She has written op-eds for The New York Times and Chicago Tribune, and has read several of her essays on NPR.
Brown is also editor of "Mr. Wrong: Real-Life Stories About the Men We Used to Love" (Ballantine Books, 2007) and author of "The Good-bye Window: A Year in the Life of a Day-Care Center" (University of Wisconsin Press, 1998) and "Madison Walks" (Jones Books, 2003). Her memoir, "Brave Girl Eating," based on a feature that ran in The New York Times Magazine, will be published in 2010.
Brown also publishes a blog titled "Feed Me."
