Deborah Hellman, professor of law at the University of Maryland Law School, will
speak as part of the Syracuse University College of Law Faculty Colloquium Series
on Monday, Feb. 16, at 11:45 a.m. in the Heritage Alumni Lounge in E.I. White Hall.

A well known scholar in bioethics, Hellman will speak on her book "When Is
Discrimination Wrong?" (Harvard University Press, 2008), which develops a much-
needed general theory of discrimination. She demonstrates that many familiar ideas
about when discrimination is wrong-when it is motivated by prejudice, grounded in
stereotypes, or simply departs from merit-based decision making-inadequately
explain our widely shared intuitions.

The College of Law's Faculty Colloquium Series features prominent legal scholars at
the forefront of their academic fields. Colloquium speakers reflect the College of
Law's dedication to furthering innovative research and fostering communication,
both within the legal academy and across disciplines.

The next colloquium speakers include SU University Professor David Driesen, who
will present "Toward a Duty-Based Theory of Executive Power" on Tuesday, Feb. 24,
and Chris Guthrie from Vanderbilt Law School on Tuesday, April 28.
