Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications will host the New York State Fair Trial/Free Press Conference, “Sex, Money and the Press: Fair Trials in the Age of New Media,” on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 7:30—9 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse 3. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in SU pay lots.
An expert panel moderated by the Hon. Albert M. Rosenblatt, retired associate judge with the New York State Court of Appeals and a judicial fellow with New York University Law School, will explore such questions as: Does the public’s right to know outweigh privacy rights of the accused and their families regarding uncharged crimes? Should bloggers be protected against subpoenas for their sources? What are the implications of the 24-hour news cycle for fair and accurate coverage of the justice system?
Panelists include John Lammers, special projects editor with the Syracuse Post-Standard; the Hon. Rosemary S. Pooler, judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit; the Hon. Deborah Karalunas, judge of the New York State Supreme Court, 5th Judicial District (Syracuse); Lorraine Branham, dean of the Newhouse School; Steven D. Clymer, chief of the Criminal Division for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York; William Fitzpatrick, Onondaga County district attorney; Glenn P. Valle, general counsel to the New York State Police; Michael J. Grygiel, attorney with Hiscock & Barclay LLP; Irene Jay Liu, staff writer for the Albany Times Union’s Capitol Confidential Blog; Dan Cummings, managing editor of News Channel 9/WSYR-TV (ABC) in Syracuse; Robert J. Bellafiore, senior partner and director of public affairs with Eric Mower and Associates; and William T. Easton, defense attorney from Rochester.
The Hon. Judith S. Kaye, chief judge of the State of New York, will give the introduction. The Hon. Robert S. Smith, associate judge with the New York State Court of Appeals, will give closing remarks.
The event is co-sponsored by Newhouse’s Tully Center for Free Speech and Carnegie Legal Reporting Program.
The conference carries two Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits. A reception will precede the program. Those interested in attending should R.S.V.P. to FTFP@courts.state.ny.us by Nov. 6.
