Syracuse University's 148th Commencement and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry's (ESF) 105th Commencement will take place in joint exercises May 12 in the Carrier Dome.
SU will graduate 2,943 bachelor's, 1,537 master's and 169 doctoral degree candidates. In addition, 28 certificates of advanced study and nine associate's degrees will be awarded.
ESF will confer 268 bachelor's, 73 master's and 20 doctoral degrees.
The College of Law will hold a separate Commencement ceremony May 19 at the OnCenter to confer 238 juris doctor degrees. Five-term Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. LAW '68, of Delaware, will speak at the law school's Commencement.
SU/ESF Commencement exercises will begin at 9:20 a.m. on May 12 with class, school and college marshals leading degree candidates into the Dome.
The academic procession will follow at 10 a.m. Nancy Weatherly Sharp, professor of newspaper journalism, will head the procession, which includes University Marshal Robert D. McClure, professor of political science and public affairs and senior associate dean in The Maxwell School; University Associate Marshal Sandra N. Hurd, professor of law and public policy in the School of Management; the newly named emeriti faculty; current faculty; administrators; academic deans; trustees and the ROTC Color Guard.
The Chancellor's party will include SU Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw; ESF President Cornelius B. Murphy Jr.; Commencement speaker Rudolph W. Giuliani; the two honorary degree recipients and their sponsors; SU Board of Trustees Chairman Joseph O. Lampe '53, G'55; ESF Board of Trustees Chair Thomas C. Burkly; and SU Alumni Association President Deborah J. Fritsche '74.
SU Vice Chancellor and Provost Deborah A. Freund will preside. The invocation will be delivered by the Rev. Thomas V. Wolfe, dean of Hendricks Chapel, and the national anthem will be sung by Kimberly J. Zerpa, a graduating senior from the College of Visual and Performing Arts' Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music.
Shaw and Fritsche will then offer greetings. Shaw will confer honorary degrees upon University Trustee Wendy H. Cohen '70 (doctorate of humane letters) and Joanne Shenandoah-Tekalihwakhwa, critically acclaimed Native American recording artist (doctorate of music). A University Scholar will speak on behalf of the group, and Giuliani's address will follow.
Shaw and Murphy will then confer doctoral degrees upon SU and ESF candidates, followed by the conferring of master's degrees and certificates of advanced study.
Freund will recognize SU Class of 2002 Marshals Sharon R. Ehm and M. Bryan Legaspi, the 12 University Scholars and three ESF Scholars.
Shaw and Murphy will then confer associate's and baccalaureate degrees upon the candidates. Giuliani's address will follow.
Garrett A. Heater, a graduating senior from the Setnor School of Music, will conclude the ceremony with the singing of the alma mater. Processional music will be provided by University Organist Christopher Marks and the SU Commencement Band, under the direction of Bradley P. Ethington, associate professor of music in Setnor School of Music.
WIXT Channel 9 will broadcast the Commencement ceremony live from 10-11 a.m. Time Warner Cable will rebroadcast the entire ceremony Monday, May 13 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 18 at 8 p.m.
