It's the ultimate win/win/win proposition: borrowers get a break on their fines, the
library gets back overdue and missing materials, and families in Onondaga County
struggling to keep food on the table get a helping hand. And this year, it's more
important than ever before.
On Thursday, Nov. 20, all Syracuse University Library locations will once again be
accepting donations of nonperishable food items in lieu of outstanding library fines.
On that day, individuals who owe overdue fines will have $1 deducted from their fine
balance for each nonperishable food item they donate. All donations will go to
Syracuse Downtown Emergency Services for distribution to those in need throughout
Onondaga County. To qualify for credit, items may be brought to E.S. Bird Library
or any of the SU Library branches and reading rooms, the SU Law Library (8:30
a.m.-7 p.m.) or the SUNY-ESF Moon Library (8 a.m.-3 p.m.).
Due to the recent economic downturn, food pantries have experienced an increase in
the number of local families seeking their services. The SU Library Food for Fines
committee asks all members of the University community to consider picking up a
few extra cans or boxes of nonperishable food items and dropping them off at the
nearest library location on Nov. 20, whether or not they have outstanding fines.
