University College's Distance Education Program offers writers the chance to jump ahead of the pack by learning a new genre of writing. A new course, Hypertext Fiction Writing, offered May 19-Aug. 5, will teach students to write hypertext as well as teach basic Web authoring techniques. The course will focus on the ways fiction and poetry writers can effectively use interactive writing to change the reading experience.
The Distance Education Program also offers other online fiction and poetry writing courses during the summer. Sophomore Fiction Workshop and Advanced Writing Workshop: Fiction are intensive workshops focused on the art and craft of writing fiction, primarily the short story. Sophomore Poetry Workshop and Advanced Writing Workshop: Poetry are intensive workshops dealing with the art and craft of writing poems. Depending on the workshop, via e-mail, students will write two or three short stories a week or write a poem each week, with extensive revisions and discussion. The sophomore and advanced workshops meet together, but students registered for the advanced workshops do additional work.
In addition to writing courses, Distance Education offers literature classes. Gender and Literary Texts: Women in/on the Hebrew Bible, offered May 19-July 31, will examine and weigh varied narrative and critical interpretations of women in the Hebrew Bible.
