This year's Lab-to-Market Conference, "Commercializing University Inventions: Case Studies,"
will be held on Friday, Nov. 7, at the Welch Allyn Lodge in Skaneateles, N.Y. CEOs of six upstate
New York early-stage companies will present the ways in which they have met the technical,
market, financial, transactional and intellectual property challenges involved in establishing a
successful company. The conference is sponsored by the New York State Foundation for Science,
Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) and the New York State Science & Technology Law
Center.
The companies and their CEOs are Kinex Pharmaceuticals LLC, Allen Barnett.; e2e Materials
LLC, Patrick J. Govang; Lumetrics Inc., John Hart; SiMPore Inc., Rick Richmond; Starfire
Systems, Richard Saburro; and Mezmeriz Inc., Brad Treat. The keynote address will be given by
Duncan Moore, vice provost for entrepreneurship at the University of Rochester and a renowned
authority on the commercialization of new technologies.

is no fee for this event, but space is limited and registration will be on a first-to-register basis.
The Lab-to-Market Series creates awareness and further understanding about the legal issues
surrounding technology commercialization and entrepreneurship. Founded by Ted Hagelin,
professor at Syracuse University College of Law, the organization began the series with a grant
from NYSTAR), which also funds the New York State Science & Technology Law Center at
Syracuse University College of Law to assist and provide information to New York state's
research centers. These centers include Centers for Advanced Technology, Strategically Targeted
Academic Research Centers, Advanced Research Centers, Centers of Excellence and Generating
Employment Through New York Science Centers.
Since NYSTAR was created in 2000, more than 75 new businesses have been created across New
York state as a result of their direct investments in university research. The Science & Technology
Law Center provides information on a wide range of technology-related legal issues, including the
protection and commercialization of intellectual property, technology transfer practices, patents,
copyright and trademark law, and licensing agreements.
