Stephen Cassell, Syracuse Architecture visiting critic and principal of ARO
(Architecture Research Office), New York City, will speak at the Syracuse University
School of Architecture on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 5 p.m. in Slocum Hall Auditorium. His
lecture, "Architecture Research Office," is free and open to the public. A reception will
immediately follow in Slocum Gallery. An exhibition of ARO's recent work will be on
display in the gallery from Oct. 13-31.
Cassell received his undergraduate degree in architecture from Princeton University
and his Master of Architecture degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
He has taught at Princeton University, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the
University of Virginia, California College of the Arts, Tulane University and the
Rhode Island School of Design. He has lectured throughout the United States. He is a
member of New York City's Green Code Task Force Technical Committee for
Climate Adaptation.
Together with Adam Yarinsky, Cassell founded ARO in 1993. ARO is an
architectural practice in which individual projects are a vehicle for research into
program, form, material and construction. The firm's acclaimed body of work
includes the U.S. Armed Forces Recruiting Station in Times Square, a flagship store
for Shiseido Cosmetics and the Prada Store in New York City (with Rem Koolhaas),
and an addition to the Princeton School of Architecture. Among ARO's current
projects is the renovation of Union Square Park's north end, now under construction.
Cassell is a visiting critic this semester at Syracuse Architecture and teaches a fourth-
year design studio.
Syracuse University School of Architecture is the fourth-oldest program in the United
States and is consistently rated among the top architecture schools in the country. In
2008, the School's undergraduate program was ranked third in the nation by
DesignIntelligence.
