Syracuse University's 147th Commencement and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry's (ESF) 104th Commencement will take place in joint exercises May 13 in the Carrier Dome.
SU will graduate 2,717 bachelor's, 1,603 master's and 132 doctoral degree candidates. In addition, 21 certificates of advanced study and nine associate's degrees will be awarded. SU's College of Law will hold a separate Commencement ceremony May 20, at which 286 juris doctor degrees will be conferred.
ESF will confer 283 bachelor's, 126 master's and 42 doctoral degrees.
Class, school and college marshals will lead degree candidates into the Dome at 9:20 a.m.
The academic procession will follow at 10 a.m. Nancy Weatherly Sharp, assistant dean in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, will head the procession, which includes University Marshal James B. Wiggins, Eliphalet Remington Professor of Religion in The College of Arts and Sciences; University Associate Marshal Robert D. McClure, professor of political science and public affairs and senior associate dean in The Maxwell School; the newly named emeriti faculty; currrent faculty; administrators; academic deans; trustees; and the ROTC Color Guard.
The Chancellor's party will include SU Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw; ESF President Cornelius B. Murphy Jr.; the Commencement speaker, NASA astronaut and U.S.A.F. Col. Eileen M. Collins '78; the other five honorary degree recipients and their sponsors; SU Board of Trustees Chairman Joseph O. Lampe '53, G'55; ESF Board of Trustees Chair Thomas C. Burkly; and SU Alumni Association President Deborah J. Fritsche '74.
SU Vice Chancellor and Provost Deborah A. Freund will preside. The invocation will be delivered by Thomas V. Wolfe, dean of Hendricks Chapel, and the national anthem will be sung by College of Visual and Performing Arts graduating senior Brenda K. McDonald.
Shaw and Fritsche will offer greetings, after which a University Scholar will speak on behalf of the group. Collins' address will follow. The Hendricks Chapel Choir will then perform under the direction of G. Burton Harbison.
Afterward, Shaw will confer honorary degrees upon:
? Collins (doctor of science);
? Goh, Kun, mayor of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, ROK, and former prime minister of South Korea (doctor of laws);
? Catherine Liggins Hughes, founder and chair of Radio One Inc., the largest African American-owned and -operated broadcast company in the United States (doctor of letters);
? Paul Kellogg, artistic director of Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown and general and artistic director of the New York City Opera (doctor of fine arts);
? U.S. Rep. Charles B. Rangel, member of Congress from New York state's 15th Congressional District (doctor of laws); and
? Florence Schorske Wald, clinical professor and former dean of Yale University's School of Nursing and co-founder of Hospice in the United States (doctor of humane letters).
Shaw and Murphy will confer doctoral degrees upon SU and ESF candidates, followed by the conferring of master's degrees and certificates of advanced study.
Freund will recognize SU Class Marshals Cara Grassia and Ryan M. Levis, the 12 University Scholars and three ESF Scholars.
Shaw and Murphy will then confer associate's and baccalaureate degrees upon the candidates.
Michael Errickson, a graduating senior in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, will conclude the ceremony with the singing of the alma mater. Music will be provided by the SU Commencement Band, under the direction of Bradley P. Ethington, assistant professor of music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts' Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music.
