Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
As Chancellor Cantor indicated to you in her message of a few hours ago, the SU community suffered the loss of one of our first-year students this morning--a resident of Dellplain Hall and a member of the Whitman Learning Community.
The Syracuse Police Department is awaiting a final ruling from the county medical examiner's office but believes that this was an apparent death by suicide.
As the Chancellor indicated, our hearts go out to the student's family, friends, roommates, fellow Learning Community members, the Whitman community, and the faculty and staff who support our first-year students.
Everyone feels impacted by, and responds to, a tragic loss such as this in different ways. Our Student Affairs staff is continuing to provide on-site counseling and support to the Dellplain community and those who have been personally affected by the loss. You should also know that that the University has a number of counseling services available to the campus community should anyone feel need for assistance. These services include the Counseling Center (443-4715), Hendricks Chapel (443-2901), and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (443-1087).
This has been a difficult day for many in our University community, and we will continue to reach out and extend care.
