Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, together with the National
Press Club (NPC), will host "What Good is the Press? Examining the First Amendment, Freedom
of the Press and the Future of Journalism" on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Joyce
Hergenhan Auditorium, Newhouse 3.
The panel discussion, which is part of a nationwide celebration of the NPC's 100th anniversary,
marks the first time the Washington, D.C.-based NPC has taken its programs on the road.
"The First Amendment is literally etched into the glass of Newhouse 3, and it is at the heart of
everything we teach here," says Charlotte Grimes, the Newhouse School's Knight Chair in Political
Reporting and organizer of the forum. "It's a delight and privilege to join the National Press Club in
examining how we protect the First Amendment and preserve journalism's core values in these
challenging times of technological and economic change."
Gil Klein, former NPC president and national correspondent for the Media General News Service, is
coordinator of the NPC's centennial project and will serve as panel moderator. Panelists include
