A one-day workshop sponsored by the School of Social Work at Syracuse University's College of Human Services and Health Professions will look at the ingredients necessary for adults and adolescents to carry out difficult dialogues, particularly those concerning sexuality. The workshop will be held February 8 in the Goldstein Student Center on SU's South Campus. The registration deadline for the workshop is February 6. Fees range from $50 to $75. The workshop is designed for school and University social workers and counselors, as well as mental health practitioners in private practice. It acknowledges that adolescents are being inundated with both negative and positive messages about sexuality, while the conversations most essential to healthy development are alarmingly inadequate. Adults lecture and adolescents retreat, or adolescents share and adults feel helpless. The workshop will address how to create containing environments for families so that challenging conversations can take place.
The presenter at the workshop will be Linda Stone-Fish, Ph.D.
Stone-Fish is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Marriage and Family Therapy in the College of Human Services and Health Professions. She has also been in private practice in the Syracuse community for more than 15 years. Before moving to Syracuse and joining academia, Stone-Fish worked full time with adjudicated adolescents.
